There are many reasons to love the Succulent Karoo.
The unique plants, striking wild animals and the resilient people who call its landscapes home are all part of its charm. It is so sparsely populated, in fact, that there are many places within the Succulent Karoo where you can be entirely on your own in the veld – no wonder this region is also a treasured getaway destination.
But it also faces serious threats – from mining, overgrazing, plant poaching and the impacts of climate change. If left unchecked, this could have dire consequences for wildlife, agriculture, and people’s livelihoods. Wouldn’t it be a shame if this national treasure trove were to be lost to us?
What is WWF doing?
We work in partnership to help conserve the Succulent Karoo. Over several years we have developed and implemented innovative conservation approaches involving private landowners, government agencies and communities to look after this region and its wild treasures.
BIG NEWS! Between the Tankwa Karoo National Park and the Cederberg Wilderness Area, we are on the brink of creating a conservation corridor that will reunite these two iconic wild spaces for the benefit of nature and people today and into the future.
