A new landfill cell has been built at EnviroServ Waste Management’s hazardous waste facility at Aloes in Gqeberha, at a time when many of the country’s municipal landfills are reaching capacity.
Construction of the cell started in November 2021 and was completed in September 2022. “Now that permission has been granted by the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and Environment, we have commenced using the cell and the first load has arrived,” said Sue Alcock, Aloes Operations Manager.
Community involvement was key in the development of the cell, with 30 unemployed people, 22 men and eight women recruited from local communities to assist with labour. “Further investment in the locally community was through SMME participation, no less than six SMMEs benefitting directly during the construction,” Alcock said.
“The development of this new cell is exciting news for the many industries who rely on us for responsible waste management, and a great investment into the industrial sector,” said Alcock.
EnviroServ recently hosted an open day where key community stakeholders including civil society organisations, schools, ward councillors, community development workers, and residents within surrounding communities took a tour of the Aloes landfill site and saw the new cell.
