Jeffreys Bay Wind Farm welcomes first-ever HSE intern to their team

More than 70 young students have taken the leap from completing their studies to kicking off their careers through the national Globeleq South Africa’s internship programme, since its inception seven years ago. One of the latest beneficiaries of this programme, which was created to develop young technical staff for a renewable energy industry, is Naledi Shai, who has joined Jeffreys Bay Wind Farm as the project’s first HSE intern.

Having completed her bachelor’s degree in Environmental Health, 2021, her interest in Renewable Energy made Naledi an excellent candidate for this internship position. She works together with Environmental Specialist, Marli Van Rooy, who is recognised in this green power sector as a young leading voice.

“Our country is currently facing a real struggle with energy availability, so I feel fortunate to be part of a company that is working towards a solution whilst contributing to a healthier environment and ecosystem,” said Naledi Shai.

Naledi, who hails from the small town of Phalaborwa, in the Limpopo Province, is the oldest of three siblings in a family of seven. She dreams of one day owning her own consultation company for Occupational Health and Safety and is passionate about renewable energy, especially in relation to the environment.

She highlights the opportunities her internship has presented, especially the chance she has been able to travel and work on difference renewable energy power projects, alongside her line manager.

“Working under the guidance of Marli, who is passionate and knowledgeable about sustainable development, has been a great honour for me and I have learned so much from her over the last 8 months. I am particularly grateful for her patients and dedication, as well as her driving me to achieve my best,” concluded Naledi.
