An illegal dumping open space along Ngakane Street in Orlando West Soweto gets the much-needed clean-up

Ngakane Street in Orlando West connects to the most popular street and renowned tourist destination, on Vilakazi Street. In celebration of the Clean-up and Recycle Week, from 12 – 17 September 2022, Dimension Data in collaboration with Clean City South Africa have partnered to clean-up the open space on Ngakane Street.

Dimension Data is an African born systems integrator and managed services provider that designs, manages, and optimises today’s evolving technology environments to enable its clients to leverage data in a digital age.

Clean City SA is an award-winning community based non-profit company with a main purpose to protect the environment from waste pollution and to fight hunger in communities. Clean City SA operates two locations in the inner-city of Johannesburg, at Pullinger Kop Park, Berea and Pretoria Street, Hillbrow which cover a distance of 863 meters. Its volunteers work hard every Saturday morning to clean-up their neighbourhoods.

Says Clean City SA founder and CEO, Dalu Cele: “We are honored to work in collaboration with Dimension Data and its employees as they play their part to clean-up the illegal dumping site which is an eye-sore for the residents of Ngakane Street in Orlando West. Ngakane Street is a stone throw away from the tourism area on Vilakazi Street. We believe that this clean-up will give the much-needed boost to the tourism area on Vilakazi Street”

Although the clean-up activity is taking place on Friday, 16 September, the main purpose of the clean-up is also to celebrate the World Clean-up Day, which will take place on Saturday, 17 September 2022. This activity is also to raise public awareness about the importance of community clean-ups, promote zero tolerance on littering, illegal dumping within the community of Orlando West.

“We as a corporate citizen have a role to play in addressing the waste we produce, and as consumers of the products that land up on landfills and on our streets. The effort we make here today is a small step in addressing a larger societal issue. The clean-up activity will contribute towards protecting the environment from waste pollution, preventing stormwater drain pollution, which in turn protects our waterways and the ocean.
